Surgery Prehab and Rehab

Prepare your body before surgery and recover faster afterward - with specialized pelvic physical therapy for hysterectomy, prostatectomy, prolapse repair, c-section, and more.

Picture

Why It Matters

Surgery Changes Your Body. Physical Therapy Helps It Adapt.

Pelvic and abdominal surgeries affect your muscles, fascia, nerves, and organs in ways that go far beyond the incision site. Without targeted rehabilitation, many patients experience prolonged recovery, scar tissue complications, pelvic floor dysfunction, and pain that lingers long after the surgical site heals. With the right PT before and after surgery, you can recover faster, more completely, and with less pain.

Surgeries We Support

We Work With Patients Before & After

Hysterectomy

Prepare your core and pelvic floor before surgery and address scar tissue, prolapse symptoms, and bladder function during recovery.

Prostatectomy

Prehab strengthens the pelvic floor before removal. Post-op PT is the gold standard for recovering urinary continence and sexual function.

Prolapse Repair

Prehab reduces surgical risk; post-op PT ensures the pelvic floor supports the repair long-term and prevents recurrence.

C-Section Recovery

Address scar tissue, abdominal separation, and core weakness — issues that are common after cesarean delivery but often overlooked.

Bladder Sling Surgery

Post-operative PT supports healing, restores normal muscle coordination, and helps you return to full activity safely.

Laparoscopy / Endometriosis Surgery

Manual therapy and scar tissue mobilization to support healing after laparoscopic procedures and minimize adhesion formation.

The Plan

Prehab vs. Rehab — Both Matter

Before Surgery (Prehab)

  • Strengthen your pelvic floor before it's disrupted
  • Learn breathing and core coordination techniques
  • Understand what to expect post-operatively
  • Reduce recovery time and complication risk
  • Set a baseline so recovery is measured and meaningful

After Surgery (Rehab)

  • Scar tissue mobilization and adhesion prevention
  • Pelvic floor retraining and coordination
  • Bladder and bowel function restoration
  • Safe return to exercise and daily activities
  • Addressing pain, prolapse symptoms, or sexual discomfort

FAQs

Common Questions

When should I start prehab before my surgery?

Ideally 4–8 weeks before your surgery date, though even 1–2 sessions can make a meaningful difference. The sooner you start, the better prepared your body will be.

How soon after surgery can I start PT?

This depends on your surgery type and your surgeon's guidance. For many pelvic surgeries, gentle PT can begin within 2–4 weeks post-op. We'll discuss the right timing with you at your first appointment.

Do I need my surgeon's clearance to start post-op PT?

We recommend getting clearance from your surgeon before beginning post-op PT. In many cases, surgeons are already recommending pelvic PT as part of their standard post-op protocol.

What if I had my surgery months or years ago?

It's never too late to address post-surgical complications. Many patients come to us with scar tissue, pelvic floor dysfunction, or pain that developed long after surgery. We can still help.
